HOW TO TRAVEL WITH YOUR NEWBORN BY AIR, FOR THE FIRST TIME.
Want to start planning a trip soon, but you just recently had a baby? Do you need to relocate to another country? Does traveling with your little one for the first time, cause uncertainty? If you answered YES to all these questions, you came to the right place.
The thought of traveling with your little one for the first time, can cause anxiety to most parents, especially first time parents. This is pretty normal, trust me.. I've been there. This will be an amazing experience and it is nothing to be worried about. I can tell you this because of my own experiences.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS ON WHAT YOU WILL NEED, BEFORE YOU TAKE THAT STEP.
•GET THE "OKAY" FROM YOUR DOCTOR/PEDIATRICIAN.
Make sure with your family doctor or your baby's pediatrician, if it's okay for you to travel with your little one. Most people don't usually do this, but I feel it's important to get the "okay", just to be safe and sure. This will help with your anxiety, as well as your fear of traveling with your little one. Most doctors advise parents to wait until their babies are about three months old, while other doctors give the "okay" at 10 days old. Always seek advice from your health provider first.
GET ALL YOUR PAPERWORK THAT YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE ALONG WITH YOU, SORTED LONG BEFORE THE TIME.
This is important. Get your baby's passport and birth certificate ready. Have certified copies of all your documents. Make sure of what documents you will need, depending on where you will be traveling to, as most countries requires you to have additional papers and documents that might take days, sometimes even weeks to get ready. Have a checklist to make sure that you will have everything you need. Your documents are the most important thing when traveling.
Once all the stress of the documentation is out of the way, the excitement starts. Deciding on your departure date, how long you will stay for and booking your flights. You will definitely have small conversations in your head, along with a checklist of what you will be taking along with you. It's FUN and EXCITING, I know.. One of the first things that will come to mind is, " What do I pack for my little one?"..
HERE ARE SOME THINGS TO PACK FOR YOUR BABY.
• A warm blanket.
• Extra set of clothing( maybe two outfits)
• Diapers, always pack extra diapers( you can never have too much diapers)
• Get the baby traveling kit, it consists of baby lotion, baby wash, baby oil and a tiny powder. The traveling kit is a good thing to have, considering that most airlines do not allow you to have any products that consists of more than a 100ml inside your hand luggage.
• A washcloth and nappy/bum cream.
• Enough bottles filled with baby formula or breast milk. Make sure that you have enough. That is important.
• A pacifier ( only if your baby uses one) a pacifier helps with their ears while flying.
• Their favorite toy or stuffed animal, to keep them entertained wile traveling.
• Have the stroller and car seat checked in before the time.
• If your little one is on solids, pack food and snacks for them.
Dress your little one comfortable and make sure to pack something to keep them warm. I travel quite often, and I always get cold while flying.
My son had a cold when I first traveled with him. His pediatrician prescribed medication for him, just my luck, it made him sleep almost the entire flight. I was a happy mamma. It was a 10 hour flight, he only woke up to nurse, and went right back to sleep. I know of parents that give their babies medication to help them sleep, while traveling. They get the "okay" from their doctor though, but I also know of parents that are against that, it didn't sit well with me either, but you decide on what will work for you and your baby.
Do not let your baby fall asleep before or while "take off" and landing. You should feed your baby, or let him eat or suck on something during "take off" and landing. This will help with their ears. The air pressure can hurt their ears, causing discomfort. You want to avoid their ears from closing or possibly bursting their eardrums. The eating and sucking will help to equalize their tiny ears. Once you in the air, with the instructions from the flight crew that it's okay to loosen your seat belts, and to move around, your little one can take a nice long nap. You can either join them, eat or watch some series or movies to relax.
If you're worried about your baby being cranky or worried about the other passengers being annoyed with your cranky baby, it's okay.. this is pretty normal. Try and make your little one comfortable as possible. Try and make yourself comfortable and try to relax and enjoy your baby's first flight. It is okay for your baby to cry, considering that they will be in a new environment and crying is their way of communicating. Take pictures and videos, capture your baby's first time traveling. These are sweet precious moments that should be enjoyed.
If you are relaxed, your baby will be too. Make the experience joyful and exciting. My first time traveling with my son, was not as bad as I thought it would be, so I'm pretty sure that you will be okay. Try and book in online, there will be an option to let them know that you will be traveling with a baby. They will place you in a certain area of the plane that are more suitable for parents and their babies.
I hope that I could help most of you with my tips.😊

Best travelling experience is when the little one is able to sleep throughout the flight! Definitely agree with you on ourselves being relaxed so that they can be relax too. Little ones can really feel us even though we don't express it. Great tips!

ReplyDeleteAaw thank you so much Veronica😊 This means so much to me.
DeleteI love your idea about the pacifier helping with their ears due to the altitude changes. Also, I can see where packing enough diapers/wipes/formula would be a must. Just the thought of running out makes my anxiety flare up!
